About The Wessex

Wessex Male Choir logo

The Wessex (the artists formerly known as 'The Wessex Male Choir') is an amateur men’s choir based in Swindon, Wiltshire, UK. The choir takes its name from the ancient kingdom of Wessex, an area of England comprised of what are now the counties of Wiltshire, Hampshire, Dorset and Somerset, ruled by King Arthur. This association is reflected in the Choir’s logo which features a wyvern - the legendary 2-legged dragon featured in the flag of Wessex

The Wessex was founded in September 2001 and maintains a strong membership of 50 or so singers from Swindon and surrounding towns and villages.

Over the last 20 years, The Wessex has built a reputation for its professionalism and entertaining repertoire and is in great demand for a variety of concert and other singing engagements. We typically perform 7or 8 concerts each year, two of these being our 'home' Summer and Christmas concerts in Swindon, the others being in various venues around the UK. For example, in 2019 (covid prevented us singing in much of 2020/21, sadly!) we performed with the lads from Barry Male Voice choir in the lovely Llandaff cathedral in South Wales and with the lovely ladies of Brize Norton Military Wives Choir at their Christmas concert in Carterton Oxfordshire. We have been privileged to have sung, on the pitch, pre-match, at 6 Nations and other Rugby and NFL matches at both Twickenham and Wembley stadium, to audiences of up to 80,000 people.

About 16 of our most experienced singers form a smaller chamber choir within The Wessex. Currently known as 'Camerata' these guys perform mainly a cappella pieces which supplement the main choir’s repertoire.

We do like a tour! We try to take a singing-orientated trip every 2 years or so, usually in the summer. Our last trip in 2019 was to Poland where we performed in many prestigious including a salt mine! Previously our tours have been to Cornwall, Italy, Ireland, Jersey and Spain. They’re fun trips and partners come along too. We are looking forward to the next one...but where will it be?

Sometimes the tours are combined with choral festivals and competitions, but The Wessex also regularly enters regional and international choral competitions usually with very pleasing results – for example:

Associations with Other Choirs. The Wessex enjoys good relationships with a variety of other choirs – Men's Choirs, Ladies' Choirs, University Glee clubs etc, both from UK and Internationally and we particularly enjoy performing joint concerts with these, often on a reciprocal basis.
