The party left Swindon for Stansted on a lovely autumn morning. The flight was on time and we arrived in Spain to...rain! However, the following morning the sun came out and we had 3 glorious days with lovely people in an interesting city.
The Sant Antonio Church in Rafaelbunol was a great treat for the Choir, and we were rewarded with the first of two standing ovations. The local choir, who were celebrating their 10th anniversary and sharing the platform with us, produced a wonderful sound. The acoustics were magical. The afterglow was excellent too, as was the singing banter on the way back to the hotel on the coach!
The following evening in Finestrat the acoustics in the new theatre were not so good. However, the after concert reception was excellent - the food was plentiful and very tasty, and the bar in the next room provided satellite TV for the choir to watch most of the RWC Final. The only damper was the result...
Sunday morning was a landmark for the choir where, not only were we treated to an air show on the beach, but this was the location of the inaugural Tenors v Basses Cricket Match. With 23 Choristers taking part, temperatures soaring into the high twenties, and using a dustbin as stumps, the Basses got the upper hand and secured victory thanks to some demon-bowling by Berwyn Jones, who took a hat-trick of wickets and produced a good innings himself, plus the best batting display of the day from Steve Smith. The MD also made two fine diving catches behind the wicket to dismiss two Tenors. The Tenors batted bravely, and Dennis Nicholson bowled superbly well, but it was not quite enough to deny the Basses their victory.
